Ashlesha means “embracing” or “to embrace.” It bears a resemblance to the sway of grown rice plants, whose stalks appear to mutually embrace one another. This phenomenon is observed when the Sun transits through Ashlesha Nakshatra and is referred to as Ashresha.

When observed from Earth, the seven orbits appear to intersect the Ecliptic, creating the appearance of rings crossing one another at two points of intersection. These points are known as the nodes of the respective Grahas.

In the case of the Moon, these two nodes are known as Rahu and Ketu. The other Grahas do not have independent nodes in the same manner. In Vedic mythology, Rahu and Ketu are also associated with a serpentine formation. The appearance of the orbital paths resembles a coiled serpent, and the word Sarpa is used to describe this symbolism associated with the seven planetary planes.
