The story

Bharani Nakshatra is ruled by Yama, and it appears like a storage jar or container, perhaps representing the halting location of the dead before the finalisation of their destination in other worlds.

After the finalisation of their destination, whether heaven or hell, all departed souls are believed to cross the mythological river Vaitarani, which is said to exist in the sky. In the Vedic age, Bharani could be considered the seat of Yama, where he is supposed to issue the edict for the departed to move forth toward their destination through Vaitarani. Because of the large number of souls travelling at any given moment, the river is always described as overcrowded and filled with subtle bodies.

At this point, however, the realm of superlative Vedic wisdom begins.

During December, after 22:00 hours, Bharani Nakshatra can be witnessed overhead, with Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, and Rohini together forming a half-circle in the sky.
