The Beauty and Beloved of Chandra

Because of its astonishing beauty, Rohini is traditionally regarded as the most favoured daughter of her father, King Daksha. The Taittiriya Samhita describes how the Moon, Chandra, was particularly interested in marrying Rohini. However, at the request of Daksha, Chandra agreed to marry all 27 of his daughters, who represent the 27 Nakshatras.

There is also an interesting astronomical phenomenon associated with Rohini. Whenever the Moon transits through Rohini, it can pass at a lower southern latitude than the principal star of the Nakshatra and, on certain occasions, occult Rohini's principal star. This gives the impression that the Moon is deeply involved with Rohini and repeatedly comes close to her. Such an occurrence can take place almost every month. Because of these repeated close conjunctions, ancient sages considered Rohini to be the Nakshatra with which the Moon had a particularly intimate association, making her his most beloved Tara. The Moon does not appear to interact with the other Nakshatras in quite the same fashion, partly because of differences in their celestial latitudes.

How to Locate Rohini

Rohini is comparatively easy to locate with the help of Mriga Mandala, the constellation commonly associated with Orion. During January and February, Rohini can be seen relatively high in the sky, often almost overhead, from around 8:30 PM onwards. Its comparatively close proximity to Earth also makes it an important and visually prominent star in the night sky.

The Story of Chandra and Rohini

According to Hindu mythology, King Daksha Prajapati married his 27 daughters to Chandra, the Moon. Initially, Chandra was happy to be the husband of all 27 sisters, and the daughters were equally delighted to have the radiant Moon as their husband.

However, this happiness did not last long. Chandra gradually became increasingly fascinated by Rohini, who was considered exceptionally beautiful. He began spending more time with her and showed her greater affection than he showed the other 26 wives.

The remaining daughters became distressed by Chandra's partiality and eventually expressed their grievances to their father, Daksha. When King Daksha learned what had happened, he approached Chandra and advised him to treat all his wives equally. Chandra listened to Daksha's words and promised to correct his behaviour.

However, after some time, his attachment to Rohini intensified once again. When Daksha learned that Chandra had returned to his old ways, he became angry. He reminded Chandra that he had already warned him, but his words appeared to have had no lasting effect. In anger, Daksha cursed Chandra, declaring that his radiance would be destroyed.

Soon after receiving the curse, the Moon began losing his brilliance and became increasingly weakened. The gods, sages and celestial beings became deeply concerned about the consequences of the curse.

Chandra's Penance to Lord Shiva

Seeing Chandra's condition, the sages and Rishis became distressed. They approached Lord Brahma, accompanied by Deity Indra, and sought a solution to the problem.

Brahmaji advised Chandra to undertake deep meditation and worship of Lord Shiva at Somnath. Chandra followed this instruction with devotion and performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva.

Eventually, Lord Shiva was pleased with Chandra's devotion and appeared before him. Shiva offered him a boon. Chandra humbly requested freedom from Daksha's curse and forgiveness for his mistakes.

Lord Shiva explained that the curse given by Daksha could not be completely removed. However, He provided a solution that would allow Chandra to retain his existence and radiance in a cyclical manner. The Moon would shine and grow in one half of the lunar month, while in the other half his radiance would gradually diminish.

This is traditionally understood as the mythological explanation behind the Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha of the Moon. During Shukla Paksha, the Moon gradually increases in brightness, while during Krishna Paksha, it gradually decreases.

Thus, the story of Chandra, Daksha and Rohini is also connected with one of the most familiar cycles observed in the sky—the waxing and waning of the Moon.
