The story

Vishakha Nakshatra

Vishakha is one of the Nakshatras located closest to the ecliptic. Its presiding deity is Indragni, a name used in the dual form to represent the two contrasting characteristics of Indra, the God of Rain, and Agni, the God of Fire.

The deity can therefore be understood as representing the combined forces of the King of Heaven and the Gods associated with rain, thunderstorms, lightning, floods, and war, while simultaneously possessing royal authority and a fierce or potentially destructive nature.

Vishakha is also associated with a double-star formation, which may have led the ancient sages to regard its presiding deity as a dual or two-in-one divine principle. Indragni finds mention in all four Vedas in this twin form and enjoys a special status in Yajna. According to the Rigveda, the twin gods ride upon their special chariot and patrol all planes of existence. They are described as eliminating enemies and bestowing wealth and worldly comforts upon their devotees.

Stars and Visibility

Every year from May onwards, Vishakha rises soon after sunset and sets just before sunrise. It can be observed throughout the night with the naked eye from many locations across the globe. During June, it generally rises approximately two hours earlier.

Symbolism and Significance

Vishakha Nakshatra is regarded as the Nakshatra of perseverance because it gives determination and enables a person to remain focused on their goals. Natives born under this Nakshatra often find themselves at a junction where they must make important decisions about their life path.

Once they choose a direction, they possess the grit, determination, and patience to pursue it, even when success comes later in life.

Vishakha Nakshatra is also known as Radha. Radha means “the delightful one” and refers to the beloved consort of Sri Krishna.

Vishakha represents a combination of Indra and purifying Agni. Consequently, natives born under Vishakha may possess passionate and warrior-like energy. They can be distinctive in their speech and may have considerable skill in making money.

The Nakshatra first activates in the 33rd year, in whichever house it is placed in the native’s birth chart.

Personality Traits

Persons born under this Nakshatra may display several contrasting characteristics. They may be less compatible in alliances while being highly productive and successful in other areas of life.

They generally do not prefer conservative ideas and may have difficulty adjusting with associates or family members. They may prefer living in a nuclear family.

Duality is one of the prime traits of Vishakha and can be reflected in their day-to-day actions. They may simultaneously display characteristics such as being:

  • Spendthrift and miserly
  • God-fearing and atheistic
  • Disciplined and careless
  • A friend and a foe
  • Soft and tough
  • Introverted and extroverted

According to Parashara, they may be haughty, zealous, revengeful, and less social, maintaining a relatively small circle of friends.

Other notable characteristics include impressive vocal expression, being less supportive or accommodating towards younger relatives of their spouse, wealth, intuition, and secrecy regarding future plans. Some of their behavioural characteristics may extend beyond conventional expectations, particularly while the Moon remains in Tula Rashi.

Auspicious Activities

Activities considered suitable during Vishakha Nakshatra include work related to precious metals, fashion items, proposing friendships, rituals for the ancestors, opening water or beverage businesses, sewing, gardening, farming, entering business agreements, purchasing paintings or artwork, vehicle-related activities, holding stocks, writing, and learning or practising dance, music, and other arts.
