The story

Hasta Nakshatra

Hasta is represented by a white star appearing like an open hand, with its companion stars forming what is recognised as the five fingers of a raised hand. The same symbolism is associated with the five fingers of Prajapati. This resemblance to the human palm led the ancient sages to name the Nakshatra Hasta, meaning “hand.”

Its ruling deity is Savita, a form of the Sun, whose name is associated with progeny. Savita is considered the fulfiller of longings, and the famous Gayatri Mantra is dedicated to him. Savita is regarded as the progenitor of the gods as well as the source associated with childbirth and is believed to exist within all beings. The name Savita also literally conveys the idea of a caretaker or facilitator of delivery and childbirth.

Savita is one of the twelve Adityas and is vividly invoked in the Vedas under various names, including Vaama, Atma, and Vishnu Chakshu. With the assistance and reciprocal support of the preceding and succeeding deities, Aryama and Tvashta, Savita becomes capable of carrying forward the chain of progeny. The deity is considered responsible for the extension of progeny and the well-being of those born from every aspect. The Rigveda describes Savita as the progenitor and protector of all beings.

Stars and Visibility

Hasta is relatively easy to spot in the night sky from locations between approximately 60 degrees north and 90 degrees south latitude. One can identify Hasta by first locating Chitra.

Its principal star is Delta Corvi, which is approximately 86.9 light-years away and around 65–70 times brighter than the Sun.

Symbolism and Significance

Centred in the zodiac sign of Virgo, Hasta Nakshatra is symbolically represented by the powerful image of a fist. Reflecting the inherent power associated with its planetary and divine lords, Hasta embodies qualities such as lustre, luminosity, brilliance, strength, beauty, and knowledge.

The fist symbol further represents strength, togetherness, unity, and power. Through the symbolic power of the hand, Hasta represents conquest, knowledge, wisdom, skill, and control.

Spirituality, close bonding, and an inclination towards music are also among the general characteristics associated with natives born under Hasta Nakshatra.

They may prefer business over employment because of their strong passion for entrepreneurship and can progress rapidly in this field. Financially, they are generally well placed, may accumulate wealth, enjoy material comforts, and lead a happy and prosperous life.

Hasta gives its natives the power to conquer and exercise authority. Their tenacity and stability of thought can distinguish them from others. They may be charming, cordial, creative, practical, generous, determined, humorous, intelligent, focused, and capable of defending themselves.

They are independent and may become recognised for their knowledge and prosperity. Hasta natives are generally warm-hearted and kind. Their selfless assistance to those in need often earns them appreciation.
