The meaning

The story of Hasta.

Hasta is represented by a white star appearing like an open hand, with its companion stars forming what is recognised as the five fingers of a raised hand. This resemblance to the human palm led the ancient sages to name the Nakshatra Hasta, meaning “hand.” The same symbolism is also associated with the five fingers of Prajapati.

Its ruling deity is Savita, a form of the Sun, whose name is associated with progeny and creation. Savita is regarded as the fulfiller of desires and aspirations, and the famous Gayatri Mantra is dedicated to Savita.

Savita is described as the progenitor of the gods as well as the source associated with childbirth and is believed to exist within all living beings. The name Savita also literally conveys the idea of a caretaker or facilitator of delivery and childbirth.

Savita is one of the twelve Adityas and is vividly invoked in the Vedas under various names, including Vaama, Atma, and Vishnu Chakshu.
