Magha Nakshatra

Magha belongs to forefathers, lineage, inheritance, and related matters. The Sanskrit word Magha itself means wealth in its various forms. Magha Nakshatra translates as “magnificent” and is symbolised by a royal throne. People born under Magha have the ability to use power and position to attain their highest goals. Those born under this star generally have a strong connection to their lineage.

Prithvi Paksha means the fortnight of the ancestors. It consists of 16 lunar days during which Hindus pay homage to their ancestors by offering food. Magha also means great or big. It is associated with the western direction and is considered a mysterious constellation.

Its principal star, Alpha Regulus, also known as Leonis, is located approximately 79 light-years from the Sun and has a radius about three times that of the Sun. In the classics, it is described as a gate or entry gate to a royal chamber.

The most surprising fact about the star is that it spins in an elliptical formation on its axis at a rate of approximately 700,000 mph, while the Sun does the same at a rate of about 4,500 mph. The source and cause of this rapid and unusual motion is still considered a mystery.

Magha can be seen from February to May from almost the entire Earth throughout much of the night. It is visible in the evening sky above the eastern horizon, gradually shifting toward the southeast and climbing higher into the sky, reaching the middle of the sky around midnight.

Mythological Story of Magha — Karna

Karna was one such character in the Mahabharata who, despite being the son of a deity, faced social stigma and was not readily accepted by society.

According to the traditional story, when Karna was taking his last breath, Lord Krishna tested him and asked for a donation. Karna broke his gold tooth and offered it to Lord Krishna. Pleased with his charity, Lord Krishna asked Karna to ask for a boon.

Remembering the injustice done to him throughout his life, Karna asked Lord Krishna to work for the welfare of people belonging to his social class in his next birth. As his second boon, he asked that his last rites be performed by someone who was completely free from sin.

Notes

While granting the boons, Lord Krishna accepted them all. However, regarding the second boon, Lord Krishna became confused and wondered who could perform the last rites, as he could not find anyone who was completely free from sin. Finally, Lord Krishna decided to perform Karna's last rites with his own hands.

In this way, Lord Krishna performed the last rites of Karna and sent his soul to Vaikunth Dham.

When Karna's soul reached Vaikunth Dham, he was offered jewels as food. Karna asked Indra why he was not being offered food. Indra told him that throughout his entire life, Karna had donated jewels to others but had never offered food to his ancestors during Shraddha Pitru Paksha. Therefore, Indra sent him back to Earth so that he could complete his duty of offering food to his ancestors.
