Swati Nakshatra

The ruling deity of Swati Nakshatra is Vayu, the God of Wind, who possesses both constructive and destructive attributes. On its positive side, Vayu is one of the most essential sources of life, while in the form of cyclones, it can also cause destruction. According to the Atharvaveda, Vayu is associated with harvest, strength, longevity, progeny, the fulfilment of desires, and the attainment of riches.

Swati Nakshatra is strongly connected with Lord Hanuman, the son of Vayu Dev. The planet Saturn attains its maximum strength in Swati Nakshatra.

Stars and Visibility

Swati is represented by a bright orange star that is relatively easy to locate. To find it, focus on the handle of the Saptarishi, which contains four stars appearing like a handled utensil and is also known as the Big Dipper.

During the summer months, from around 9 PM onwards, the star can be observed passing high overhead in the sky.

The Story of Shani and Hanuman

According to legend, when Meghnad, the son of Ravana, was born, Ravana defeated all nine Grahas and placed them in the 11th house of Meghnad’s horoscope so that his son could become invincible and immortal.

However, Shani did not wish to remain in the position assigned to him and stretched his leg towards the 12th house. Ravana realised that this could ultimately cause Meghnad’s death. In anger, Ravana broke Shani’s foot and imprisoned him.

Later, when Hanuman was searching for Mata Sita in Lanka, he noticed that Shani was being held captive by Ravana in a prison cell. Hanuman rescued Shani, who was extremely pleased with him. Shani then promised Hanuman that those who prayed to him on Saturdays would be protected from the painful effects of Shani Sade Sati.

This is one of the traditional stories explaining the association between Shani and Lord Hanuman and why Shani is believed to favour Hanuman devotees.
